Painting Cows in the Landscape

Join me for a two-session workshop where you’ll learn to capture the beauty of pastoral scenes. From open meadows to rolling pastures and farmland, we’ll focus on integrating cows into the landscape from the very beginning—so together they can be simplified into larger shapes and value patterns that form a strong, unified composition.

Using a limited palette and small panels, we’ll simplify the process to deepen understanding and strengthen your design skills. Working from photo references, this workshop will include demonstrations, discussion, exercises, assignments, and constructive critiques designed to build your skills and confidence.

We’ll cover:

Designing a strong composition
Using perspective to create depth
Painting atmosphere
Working with a limited palette for color harmony
Understanding color temperature
Developing expressive brushwork
Tips for painting from photos, along with key principles you can apply when painting en plein air

By the end of the workshop, you’ll complete two paintings and gain a clear process for simplifying complex scenes into cohesive, expressive landscapes. I will be teaching in oil, but you’re welcome to work in the medium of your choice. All levels are welcome.
